National Mercury Reduction Programs Database - FY04

Prepared By Andy Bray

February 20, 2003

Where We Are
The National Mercury Reduction Programs Database is a repository of information on local, state, and federal mercury reduction activities. The database is designed to allow for information sharing on what reduction strategies and programs exist and what the results of these programs have been. The database is searchable by state, product, affected groups, type of program, as well as being full-text searchable.

The Database resides on NEWMOA's website at http://www.newmoa.org/prevention/mercury/programs/. There are over 150 records in the Database with programs from twenty states, ten local programs, as well as regional, federal, and international programs. There is an online input form to be used for adding programs to the database. The input form is accessible to anyone who visits the site. For quality control, new programs are reviewed by NEWMOA staff before being posted to the web.

Currently, Centers are contributing to the data collection effort by soliciting information from programs throughout their region using regional listservs, newsletters, emails and other vehicles. Centers have also been forwarding relevant information to NEWMOA on an ongoing basis as they become aware of it.

Contributions to Meeting Our National Goals

The National Mercury Reduction Programs Database is a perfect example of how P2Rx can use its reach to the state and local level to build a national collection of information. By making this collection available nationally, assistance providers can learn what mercury reduction activities exist and how they might leverage these efforts, hence preventing the duplication of effort.

Serve as the "first-stop" for pollution prevention information for environmental service providers - The National Mercury Reduction Programs Database acts as a national repository of information on mercury reduction activities. There is no other collection of this kind nationally that provides information on outreach and assistance efforts focused on the reduction of mercury releases to the environment.

Increase the awareness, accessibility, and usability of P2 information - The Database has been integrated with the Mercury Topic Hub on the NEWMOA website so that users of the Hub can access the reduction program information without needing to visit the stand-alone database. For the hubs specific to thermostats, thermometers, and dental clinics, visitors can view canned search results of the database specific to each of these areas.

Facilitate dynamic, regional P2 networks - Assistance programs who visit the database can learn about programs that are going on around the country and find out who to contact for more information about each program. Some assistance staff are more likely to pick up the phone and call someone within their own region for more information on their assistance efforts than they are to call someone across the country. By providing the database in an easily searchable format, assistance programs are easily able to make this connection.

Specific deliverables for FY04:

  • Centers will continue to contribute to the data collection effort by soliciting information from programs throughout their region using regional listservs, newsletters, emails and other vehicles
  • Centers will continue to forward relevant information to NEWMOA on an ongoing basis as they become aware of it

What are the estimated resources needed to meet these deliverables?
A commitment of $500 per center to cover the cost of soliciting program information from programs throughout their region.
