Homes Across America
The new residential construction
technology showcase that opens the “front door”
to resource efficient
and high performance home building.
http://homes-across-america.org
How it contributes to our goals:
Addresses one of the largest
industries in the country. Home construction is a $275 billion
a year industry in the U.S. Construction and home operation demand
a tremendous amount of resources including raw materials, water
and energy. These activities also pose a pollution risk to surface
water, air quality and produce tons of debris. Resource efficient
homes conserve natural resources, minimize pollution and waste products,
provide a healthy environment for the occupant, and reduce costs
associated with maintenance, repair and utilities.
Serve as the "first-stop" for pollution prevention
information for environmental service providers. – HAA significantly
contributes to a diverse national network of residential construction
experts and gives it cohesion. HAA will also serve as an “idea bank”
for new technologies employed around the country. Activity and outcome
measures will be easily accessible: the number of assistance providers
participating, the feedback from them, and the number of profiles
completed.
Increase the awareness, accessibility, and usability of P2
information. – Profiles are presented on the world
wide web in a consistent, user-friendly format making it easy to
find, compare and contrast various technologies and ideas. HAA feature
categories cover the spectrum of green building technology and point
to a whole house approach to design, construction and life cycle
issues. Activity measures will include number of homes profiled
and web visitation statistics. Outcome measures will include an
annual “State of Green Building” report profiling trends and changes
from year to year.
Facilitate dynamic, regional P2 networks. – HAA is
a network built by participants. We have received major partnership
interest from OECA, HUD, NAHB, DOE, USDA and many regional, state
and local entities. These alliances will strengthen P2Rx reach and
visibility in all endeavors.
Where we are:
Database: A dynamically-generated, interactive web
site has been completed and is currently in testing and minor revision.
It is REALLY COOL!!! A domain has been secured. Projected launch,
April 2003.
Marketing: Several promotional pieces have been developed
and are available to use at your events.
Data Collection: We have contacted and included assistance
providers for forty-two states. We have potential case studies in
14 states. One profile is complete, one is near completion and a
third is in process. (See attached Detailed Summary of Data Collection
for more information.)
Proposed Deliverables and Resources for FY 04:
Marketing:
· Project linked
from P2Rx web site and referred to as appropriate on other center
web sites as a resource.
· Distributing
promotional materials at regional events
Technical Assistance:
· As P2Rx Centers
hear of new green home construction in their states, pass contact
information on to us.
A small, upfront investment of your time will pay long-term dividends,
very soon and for the foreseeable future. HAA is good for people,
the environment, and the economy and will add national recognition
for P2Rx in a major U.S. industry.
Peaks to Prairies proposes to enhance HAA in FY 04 with the following:
· Expanded performance
measures for each home such as graphical representation of feature
category emphasis, and an opportunity for builders and designers
to evaluate resource efficiency achieved.
· More home profiles
and updating assistance providers information.
· Feature particular
aspects of resource efficient construction such as “resource efficient
remodeling.”
Homes Across America
Selection Criteria for Homes:
Homes Across America considers homes completed during or after
the year 2000 that showcase resource efficient technologies. The
showcase highlights the seven feature categories listed below:
To be selected, homes must:
- Have at least one feature in both the Site and Design
and Energy Efficiency categories
- Describe a minimum of 15 features in a combination of
categories
- Describe at least one feature Innovation (a more
in-depth review of a particularly innovative feature)
In addition to the above, Homes Across America will select
profiles based on the variety of features presented, how features
address unique climate and site considerations, and evidence
of how resources are being conserved. For homes that are selected
as Showcase Homes, a good contact person must be available
with whom HAA staff can finalize the profile.
|
|
Homes Across America will give the Integrated
Design Award when descriptions of resource efficiency
exemplify the following definition:
Homes and their surroundings operate as a system with all
components (products, location, orientation, equipment, etc.)
functioning as one. When each component interacts efficiently
with the others, the home has achieved an integrated design.
An integrated design also brings together the client, the
design team, and the construction team to optimize resource
efficiency and environmental performance from construction
through to the end of the home's useful life.
