Regional Update

WMRC hired Tyler Rubach as the Internet Communications Specialist in May 2003. In June Jini Cook left WMRC and moved to Virginia when her spouse accepted a position at James Madison University. Jini has since accepted a position working for JMU as well. In September, Blake Harvey left WMRC to accept a position at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications within the U of I. WMRC is in the process of filling these positions. Laura Barnes is now the P2Rx and GLRPPR listserv manager in addition to help desk librarian.

GLRPPR recently held our Summer Roundtable in Erie, PA. The turnout was less than half compared to the last two years. The primary contributing factors were budgets and out of state travel restrictions. Overall the conference agenda, location and program in general were VERY well received. The agenda can be viewed from the web site.

GLRPPR is in the process of evaluating services and programs given the budgets and departmental changes in many organizations that are involved in the GLRPPR. One of the main issues being assessed is the number of conferences and meetings GLRPPR hosts each year. GLRPPR has solicited input from a handful of long time members and has assessed their comments. In general the needs of the members have changed somewhat. One primary recommendation, due to budgets, etc. is to reduce the number of conferences and events from two to one per year. GLRPPR will further evaluate the best time of year to host a single meeting, the format and focus. GLRPPR plans to inquire with the members and contacts at large about their needs and what new services GLRPPR could offer them.

Illinois:

Sustainable Schools Project
IL EPA has partnered with WMRC to develop a P2 and Environmental Schools program that will include training to teachers on alternative classroom lessons, chemistry experiments, etc. The program will also provide online resources that teachers can easily access for future use. The program also consists of performing lab assessments to assist schools with identifying and disposing of old, obsolete and extremely hazardous chemicals within the school as well as providing facility outreach on cost and waste savings opportunities, such as energy efficient lighting options that the school administrators and facility maintenance personnel could pursue.

Technology Diffusion Program
IL, KY, & MN have partnered to develop a technology diffusion demonstration project funded by U.S. EPA. Tim Lindsey from WMRC is leading Illinois, Cam Metcalf is leading Kentucky, and Cindy McComas is leading Minnesota.

Indiana:
Indiana recently named a new Pollution Prevention Program Manager at Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Karen Teliha replaced John Chavez. Karen is now serving on the GLRPPR steering committee.

Michigan:
The MI DEQ recently underwent an internal reorganization. Marcia Horan is now the Chief of the Pollution Prevention and Compliance Assistance Section in the Environmental Science and Services Division at Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

Marcia Horan was recently elected to the NPPR Board of Directors as the Region 5 Board Member and Liaison to GLRPPR. She will serve on the GLRPPR Steering Committee for the length of her NPPR board term.

The Department of Environmental Quality has received the MVP2 award from the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable (NPPR) for its Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program (RETAP).

Minnesota:
Cindy McComas recently vacated the position of NPPR Region 5 Board Member, which also serves as the liaison to the GLRPPR. Cindy was elected to an “at large” NPPR board member position.
