Peaks to Prairies Center Update

October 2-3, 2003
Possible Leveraging/Partnering Projects

  1. Public Lands P2 – Peaks to Prairies would like to create a “toolkit” of resources that state P2 programs could use to assist public land managers with their environmental management. Could include topic hubs (public lands, green purchasing, environmental measurement, etc.), youth education activities, tool to match audit findings with P2 measures, other?

This toolkit would be made available at the “new” Sharing Common Ground conference tentatively scheduled for May ‘04. We would also like P2Rx represented at this conference.
  2. Topic Hubs for Tech Ed – The topic hubs beg to be used by vocational educators to instruct the future work force about P2 in their field. This year we are forming a focus group to explore what may need to be added or adapted in the residential construction hub to make it a useful curriculum resource. We will include several teachers, building industry folks and would like another P2Rx Center representative.
  3. P2 in Agriculture – Last year we proposed creating a database of regional P2 in agriculture projects. EPA (regional and HQ) and the state programs were quite receptive to using this product. Preliminary discussions with Department of Ag, Ginah Mortensen at the Ag Compliance Assistance Center, and USDA yielded equally positive reactions. We plan to use NEWMOA’s “projects database” as a template. This relatively simple approach will make us better acquainted with the state of P2 in agriculture in our region as well as providing a requested service. Any centers interested in exploring this for their region too? (Data template attached)

Hot Issues in Region 8

  • Coal bed methane drilling (Wyoming, Montana, Colorado)
  • West Nile virus (Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota)
  • Water quality (all) – especially non-point source issues
  • Air quality – especially regional haze (all – especially Wyoming, North Dakota, Colorado)
  • Community development (Colorado, Utah, Montana)
  • Recreation industries (Colorado, Montana, Utah, Wyoming)
  • Agriculture (all)
  • Development of Environmental Management Systems for all types of businesses and agencies (all)
  • P2 Integration, i.e. it makes a lot of sense to consider P2 in everything and restructuring programs to reflect that. (Colorado, Utah)
  • Measurement (all)
  • Renewable energy technology development
